September 2009 ~ KNOX COUNTY: Couple charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty
Animal control officers went to a residence and found numerous dead and malnourished animals on the property. At least one horse, rabbit, and cat were found dead, along with five dogs and three roosters. Officers seized 13 live dogs and 6 horses, many of which were malnourished.

September 25, 2009: PIKE COUNTY ~ Dog fighting ring
Four dogs were seized by animal control officers from a residence in the Ferrells Creek area following an investigation of a possible dog fighting operation. The dogs had multiple bite marks and injuries. Someone had filed the back teeth of one of the dogs to make them sharper. Three of the dogs may be adoptable, but one will probably have to be euthanized because it is too aggressive. One of the adoptable dogs, named King, had been used as “bait” for the fighting dogs. He is healing from multiple injuries. Despite King’s history, he still craves affection from people. Four men were charged for operating a dog fighting rind and animal cruelty. One of the men is facing a class D felony, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The others are facing a class A misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

October 2009: GRAVES COUNTY ~ Pit Bull Owners Charged with Animal Cruelty
Animal shelter workers in Graves County removed more than 70 pit bulls from a residence and in a rural wooded area about two miles away. The dog owners were charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty, a felony. Thirty-eight of the dogs were adults. Many had bites and torn ears. One was missing an eye. At least 30 of the dogs had scars consistent with injuries from dogfighting or low weight indicating they were being trained for fighting. Information and paraphernalia consistent with dogfighting were discovered during a search of the home. The owners of the dogs originally claimed they were running a rescue operation for pit bulls formerly involved in fighting. They later claimed they were breeding dogs. Police are trying to determine if dead pit bulls found in neighboring McCracken County are linked to the dog owners. The dead dogs had been tossed off a bridge into a creek near the Graves County line.

December 2009: WARREN COUNTY ~ Adonis the Boxer Abused by owner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
December 2009: Kentucky named the best state to be an animal abuser by the Animal Legal Defense Fund
“Based on a detailed comparative analysis of more than 3,800 pages of statutes, tracking fourteen distinct categories of provisions, the report recognizes the states where animal law has real teeth, and calls out those like Kentucky – the single worst in the nation again this year for animal protection laws – where animal abusers get off easy."
Here's a list of reasons from why Kentucky is so bad when it comes to protecting animals:
Felony provision available only for cruelty against select animals
No felony provisions for extreme neglect or abandonment
Inadequate definitions/standards of basic care
Principal protections apply only to select types of animals
No mental health evaluations or counseling for offenders
No cost mitigation & recovery provisions for impounded animals (e.g. cost of care bonds, other reimbursement of costs, liens, restitution provisions)
No forfeiture of abused animals
No restrictions on future ownership or possession of animals following a conviction
Veterinarians are prohibited from reporting suspected cruelty or fighting
No provisions for select non animal related agencies/professionals to report suspected animal abuse
Inadequate humane agent provisions and no duty on peace officers to enforce animal protection laws
No separate crime for the sexual assault of an animal
No statutory authority to allow protective orders to include animals
Inadequate animal fighting provisions
JANUARY 2010
The tendency to cruelty should be watched in children and if they incline to any such cruelty, they should be taught the contrary usage. For the custom of tormenting and killing other animals will, by degrees, harden their hearts even toward man. Children should from the beginning be brought up in an abhorrence of killing or tormenting living beings. They who delight in the suffering and destruction of inferior creatures will not be apt to be very compassionate or benign to their own kind. ~ John Locke
January 10, 2010: MASON COUNTY ~ N.Ky. Man Charged With 30 Counts Of Animal Cruelty
Neighbors of a farm on Key Pike near Marysville, Kentucky called the sheriff’s department after seeing the bodies of six dead horses in a field. 150 horses and donkeys lived on the farm. According to a sheriff who went to the property to investigate the complaints, "There was no water out for the animals, very minimal water." There was hay and feed for the horses and donkeys on the property, but these were not accessible to the animals. The farm owner claimed he has been in poor health and that a hired hand was supposed to be taking care of the animals. The sheriff commented that, "I don't believe economics is part of the problem here. I believe its just neglect of the animals," The owner was charged with 30 counts of cruelty to animals and six counts of failure to dispose of carcasses. The horses were allowed to remain on the property unless a judge ordered them elsewhere.
A patron at the 460 Car Wash in Frenchburg noticed what appeared to be stuffed animals in a bag in the facility's rafters. Further inspection revealed the remains of six cats who had been shot to death, two possums, a hog's head, a chicken and some unidentified animal bones. According to Pam Rogers, HSUS' Kentucky state director, "These innocent animals were killed and discarded like trash, and deserve justice for the horrific suffering they surely endured. Their assailant, who is certainly a danger to animals, can pose a serious threat to people."
February 2010: CLAY COUNTY ~ Cops, kids attend cockfight
Camera footage from an undercover operation showed children and uniformed police officers attending a cockfight in Manchester, Kentucky. Cockfighting is a cruel blood sport that is illegal in Kentucky and every other state. The video showed roosters thrashing at each other in a cockfighting pit. As the camera panned to the crowd of dozens gathered, cheering for the birds, at least four law enforcement officers can be seen in the crowd. The manager of animal fighting issues for the Humane Society of the United States stated, "Kentucky police officers should not treat this criminal activity with a wink and a nod, and it's another sign that state lawmakers must act to strengthen the penalties for cockfighting."
April 27, 2010: HART COUNTY ~ Dog abuse allegations
Allegations of animal abuse have been made against a resident of Bonnieville who breeds dogs, including coonhound, beagles, and elkhounds. Witnesses, who want to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation, claim the breeder has killed animals and let dogs feed off the carcasses. One of the witnesses took photos on the property. He claimed he saw dogs lying around dead. “There's two behind the shed and one in front of the dog kennel that was freshly killed that two other beagles ate.” The witness also claimed the breeder abused dogs on hunting trips. "He'd choke them down so bad he'd have to carry them out of the woods after he gets them choked down." When asked if the dog was dead, the breeder explained the dog was on his last leg. According to the reporter who saw the photos, "The pictures of alleged dog abuse are so horrific we can't show you all the images." Another witness claims she saw the breeder kill a dog. She allegedly saw 8-10 dead dogs on the property. "It was severe. Nothing, no feet were left. No paws or anything left on the feet. The guts were cut out." The breeder claims he trades dogs and denies accusations that he has harmed his animals. Kentucky State Police have been to the residence and said they saw no signs of animal abuse.
On Memorial Day police were called to a residence in Corbin, Kentucky, where a man lived with his ex-wife. While the ex-wife was in Ohio, she exchanged text messages with her ex-husband telling him she wanted to end their relationship. Later that day, she called her ex-husband. During the conversation, the man said, "Your dog’s acting weird" and that he should "finish her off." Minutes later, the woman received a text message that read, "Your dog’s dead." A message sent later read, "Princess is going out with the trash tomorrow and I'll be gone." The woman’s son found Princess' body in the yard beside the house. He cleaned her and wrapped her in a blanket. An autopsy indicated Princess died from blunt force trauma. The man was originally charged with a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. However, that charge was upgraded to a felony following a July court appearance during which a Whitley County Assistant Attorney asked the Judge to amend the charge to a felony.
June 2009: MERCER COUNTY ~ 14 neglected horses removed from farm
Fourteen American Saddlebred horses were removed from a farm on Curry Pike in Harrodsburg after neighbors reported to police that the horses were being neglected. The emaciated horses included several pregnant mares, with last year’s weanlings at their sides. Several starved young stallions were found in the same pasture, running loose among the mares and possibly rebreeding with those who were not already in foal. The county animal control officer said the horses were not being fed. Most of the horses were also in dire need of farrier (horseshoeing) attention. Because the horses are being held as evidence, their hooves can't be trimmed and mended until the case proceeds through the court. The owner of the horses, a local developer, was charged with second-degree animal cruelty, which is a misdemeanor.
November 10, 2010: CLAY COUNTY ~ Suit Filed Over Extreme Animal Neglect by Officials in Clay County, Kentucky
An outraged resident of Clay County filed a lawsuit against the county for extreme neglect of animals at the county’s shelter. Although the state legislature provided the county three years to come into compliance with Kentucky’s Humane Shelter Law, the county failed to meet the minimal requirements. According to the complaint, the county shelter is woefully inadequate and many, if not most of the dogs, are housed in one large, open-air pen that does not protect them from the elements. The resident who filed the lawsuit said she saw filthy cages, dead and dying puppies, and dog food strewn amongst urine and feces. Animals were left without food and water over the weekend. In addition, the County has refused to adopt certain dogs to the public, keeping them at the shelter when adoptive homes are available. Nearly all of the cats have serious upper respiratory infections. None of the sick or injured animals receive veterinary care and they are often left to languish in their cages until they die or are euthanized.
~ 2011 ~
Highway workers in Ohio County found a dog that had been struck by a car on a highway near Beaver Dam and called for assistance. A five year veteran of the Ohio County Sheriff's department arrived on the scene and struck the dog on the head with a garden hoe, allegedly to put the dog out of its misery. One of the highway workers subsequently buried the dog, believing it was dead. Three days later a road worker found the dog alive, wandering the roadway in need of assistance, after apparently struggling out of the grave. The dog, now named Chance, was taken to a vet for medical treatment. Two month after the incident, misdemeanor charges of second-degree animal cruelty were filed against the deputy and the state worker involved in burying the dog. Following an uproar in social media, the state worker and the deputy were fired. Chance is expected to make a full recovery. She initially presented with a lot of problems and was stabilized over a few days. According to the vet who is treating Chance, "Her vision came back the fourth day. It’s pretty remarkable she survived any of the incidents, especially the burial."
A woman was driving on a rural road when she saw two men with their truck pulled to the side of the road. The men had guns, which they were using to beat on something in the dirt behind the truck. Because she was afraid, the woman waited until the men left. When she returned to the scene, she discovered a purebred foxhound who likely had been abandoned and beaten because she had failed at her hunting duties. The woman took the dog, with one eye missing, broken bones, and a fractured skull that led to a traumatic brain injury, to Homeward Bound. Their veterinarian was able to heal the dog's physical injuries, but her emotional scars took a little more time. The dog, who was named Miracle, was placed in a foster home. "Even if you would talk at a normal volume, she would cower and shiver. She would pancake and not leave her spot on the floor." The foster parents also suspected that Miracle wasn’t fed regularly, because she would get very excited at mealtimes.
A former worker at the Campbell County Animal Shelter in Taylorsville, Kentucky claims he witnessed the brutal killing of dogs and cats, botched euthanasia and animals being buried alive. A letter written by an inmate at the Taylor County Detention Center, and former worker at the animal shelter, claims animals were mistreated, improperly euthanized, and buried before they were dead. The inmate, who is serving time for arson, spent months at the shelter on work release this spring. The inmate detailed his claims of botched euthanizations by shelter employees. "Sometimes they would bypass all that trouble and just shoot them. Some would stagger around falling and bumping into things, dying slowly." The shelter director denies the allegations, but the State of Kentucky and the Animal Legal Defense Fund haven't been so quick to dismiss the claims. One of the allegations in the letter was of animals that were thrown into the shelters incinerator, called the "eliminator," while they were still alive. In addition, the letter claims the shelter director was part of a mass euthanization of 39 animals on April 7. Because the shelter's incinerator was broken that day, the inmate says he was instructed to dig three mass graves with a backhoe in woods above the shelter and that some of those animals were buried while they were still alive. "They had us dump them in the holes.” Taylor County Judge Executive Eddie Rogers said he takes all claims of abuse seriously, but said the allegations are not true. The inmate’s letter ended up in the hands of the Kentucky EPS as a "complaint regarding improper disposal of animal carcasses. Two EPA investigators went to the shelter and "identified three separate areas in the woods near the shelter that appeared to have been recently disturbed." The shelter director admitted that the shelter euthanized 39 animals on one day and buried them in mass graves because the incinerator was broken, but claimed all the animals died humanely. If allegations are true, shelter employees, including the director, could be charged with animal cruelty and torture, both misdemeanors in the state of Kentucky.
A husband and wife were accused of hoarding animals and operating a puppy mill out of their home in Campbellsburg, KY. Nearly 120 dogs, at least 25 cats, nine horses, 54 rabbits, guinea pigs, an owl and a hybrid wolf were all seized from the property. Many of the animals were blind, sick, injured, and hungry. Authorities said it was one of the worst cases of animal neglect they had ever seen. Bond for the couple was set at $653. Despite the high number of charges, they were all misdemeanors. The judge denied the prosecutor's request to increase the bond.
Two dogs, a year old Great Pyrenees and a four month old German Shepherd Dog, ran out of a garage when their owner opened the garage door on Christmas day. A neighbor subsequently shot and killed both dogs because they were allegedly chasing chickens on his property. The sheriff's office said the neighbor has shot and killed several other dogs on his property in the past. According to a Kentucky law (KRS 258.235) property owners have the right to protect their property and animals if threatened or damaged. As a result, the neighbor is not facing any criminal charges for shooting the dogs.
A beautiful, loving boy was savagely killed by a steel trap laid for the purpose of snuffing out some poor, wild creature. The trap was set in an area where children play and families walk/run their dogs. His very last moments were agony: From the moment he poked his head into that lethal device until he was gone maybe one minute elapsed. No creature deserves to die like that let alone a member of the family. Billy Boy was the embodiment of devoted love and loyalty.
Someone broke into the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society after the facility closed Friday evening and let nine dogs out of their cages, including puppies and a large, friendly Pit Bull. Four of the dogs were found on the property. On Monday morning one of the puppies was found in a dumpster at a McDonald’s restaurant. The puppy had recently been spayed and had sutures in her abdomen. When found, the puppy was shivering and was having a difficult time breathing. On New Year’s Day a Pit bull was found lying in a field in Northern Henderson County. The male Pit Bull, who is now named Sammy, was suffering from injuries authorities believe are consistent with dog fighting. Sam, or Sammy weighed half of what he should and had multiple injuries ranging from tears, punctures, and an injured eye. Authorities believe Sammy was used as a "bait dog" which are used to entice other dogs in dog fights.
A family in Dixon County had a litter of ten puppies. One by one four of the puppies went missing. An anonymous caller contacted the Webster County Sheriff’s Department and reported the family’s neighbor, Andrea Searcy, was responsible for the disappearances. When a Springfield sheriff confronted Searcy, she readily admitted killing one of the puppies with a pitchfork and burning it. Searcy told authorities the puppies were in her yard. The family believes the three other missing puppies met the same fate. The six remaining puppies are now in a shelter. Searcy faces a charge of animal cruelty. The family hope she is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. January 9 - 13, 2012 Hopkins County, KY: Animal Abandonment Incidents Reported in Hopkins
Between January 9th and 13th, several animals were found abandoned at a truck stop/travel center near the Pennyrile Parkway in Mortons Gap, KY. A man living in an apartment in Jeffersontown was arrested after neighbors called police and reported hearing the sound of a dog yelping. When police entered the apartment, the man’s girlfriend’s was washing the Boxer mix named Juba. The police said the man, Shawn M. Cardwell, was agitated and belligerent. He told police that the dog had gotten out of his cage while he was at work and made a mess of the apartment. The girlfriend told them that Cardwell had called her earlier in the day and told her to come pick the dog up before he either, "lets it loose or kills it." Police found a cracked stick in the apartment with what appeared to be blood on it. Cardwell admitted hitting and kicking the dog. Juba was bleeding from his rear leg and his eyes were very red and bloodshot. Both Juba and another dog were taken into custody by Metro Animal Services. Cardwell was charged with second-degree cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor.
Two homeless puppies were left at a trailer park. One of the residents of the trailer park began feeding them. One morning he found one of the puppies under his porch. The puppy had been shot in the face. The Animal Control Officer picked up the puppy and was horrified by what he found. Gabriel had been shot in the nose and the bullet traveled downward and shattered his lower jaw. Gabriel was only 5 months old. WAGGING his tail the people at the shelter tenderly loved on him till he passed. One of the volunteers held him in her arms until he slipped from the pain of this earth. Gabriel is now across rainbow bridge to be free of this pain. The other stray puppy was surrendered to animal control because the trailer park resident was afraid the second puppy would meet the same fate as Gabriel.
This little guy is one of four dogs removed from a small camper in Calhoun, KY. There were also seven cats. The owner is allegedly in the hospital and the animals were left to fend for themselves. The dogs were emaciated. They are receiving care and food. The cats are all underweight and not very socialized. They are getting friendlier, but most of them don't stand a chance without foster homes or people to sponsor them.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an animal cruelty case following the discovery of a small severely injured Pit Bull. The dog/six month old pup was dragged behind a vehicle until the chain broke, causing extensive injuries to his head, sides and chest. The dog, now named Malachi, lost between 30 and 50 percent of his skin during the incident and the wounds were covered in gravel.
Twelve dogs were found in the area of Moore's Creek Road and Highway 289. In the past 45 days, more than 130 dogs were dumped in remote areas in Marion County. The animals have been dropped off in groups of five to 27. Some of the abandoned dogs were hit by cars and others were found dead. One dog was so weak he couldn't stand. These dogs have been left in very rural areas where they don't know where they are and have no means of caring for themselves. This is not only inhumane, it's a crime that has seriously taxed the resources of the Marion County Animal Shelter, which is struggling to catch and care for all these animals. The Marion County animal control officer believes the dog dumping could be linked to recent claims that animals at the Taylor County Animal Shelter were buried alive in mass graves. Residents of Taylor County having been calling the Marion County Animal Shelter saying they don’t want to take dogs to the Taylor County Animal Shelter. Some people are choosing to abandon their dogs at the Marion/Taylor line, causing the Marion County Animal Shelter to become overcrowded with dogs from both counties and forcing the shelter to euthanize more dogs than usual. By law the animal shelter has to keep the dogs for five days. Currently, there are about 100 dogs at the shelter.
Two Yellow Labrador Retrievers, who lived on a 200 plus acre farm with their family in Guston, KY were found fatally shot. Max and Sammy had been turned loose Sunday evening so they could get some exercise, as they were every evening. When the family attempted to call the dogs home, they heard two gunshots from a wooded area. The next day, after hours of searching, the family received phone calls from two strangers who had found the dogs' bodies and identified them from the names and phone number on their collars. The two dogs had been placed beside one another near Route 60 not far from the family’s home. Max and Sammy had been given to the three children in the family by their father, an army veteran, before his last deployment to Iraq. The sheriff believes the person who shot the dogs used a handgun.
Sassy, an 8 year old yellow Labrador Retriever who is an "outdoor dog", wandered away from her home. The following morning Sassy’s family discovered that Sassy wasn’t in her dog house. The family searched and through binoculars saw that Sassy was on a rock ledge several feet above Herrington Lake. Workers from Camp Dick Fire and Rescue were called to help and discovered that one of Sassy’s paws was caught in a hunting trap. Sassy was in the trap for approximately 18 hours. She was taken to the vet. The injury to her paw was deemed to be minor. Authorities in Garrard County are trying to determine whether the trap was set legally.UPDATE--->FEBRUARY 9 ~ Taylor County, KY: Doggie dumper arrested and charged with cruelty to animals: Taylor County woman charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty.
Christina Gribbins, the operator of "A New Leash Animal Rescue," allegedly collected dogs from surrounding shelters and rescue programs. She said she became overwhelmed with too many animals and abandoned 23 dogs on Highway 412 in Marion County. "Instead of asking for help, she opted to go that route," the county sheriff said. "Gribbins should have contacted a local animal shelter for help. The real tragedy is that several of the dogs Gribbins dumped did not survive. Some were run over, and one froze to death."
Cruelty to animals in the second degree is a Class A misdemeanor. The penalty for a Class A misdemeanor is up to 12 months imprisonment and up to a $500 fine.
February 14, 2012 ~ GRAVES COUNTY: Approximately 100 Dogs Rescue from Alleged Dog Abuser Posing as a Rescue Organization
The Animal Rescue Corps along with the Graves County Sheriff's Department raided "Paws, Claws and More" animal rescue in Wingo, Kentucky and seized 96 starving and sick dogs. They also found nine dead dogs on the property. The animal were living in deplorable conditions. Responders to the scene found various breeds and sizes of dogs including hound mixes, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Maltese, Pomeranians, a Rottweiler and many other breeds running loose among piles of debris and living in crowded, dilapidated pens and small filthy cages in several buildings on the property. Besides the dead dogs and dog bones scattered throughout the property and dogs consuming the remains, they also saw several dog bodies in burn piles. According to Scotland Haisley, the Animal Rescue Corps President, it was one of the worst cases of animal abuse that he had ever seen. “It was not at all a rescue organization. It wasn't a hoarder. It wasn't a puppy mill. It was a dog abuse case...The dogs had no access to food, water, or shelter. They were eating each other to stay alive.” All of the animals, dead and alive, were removed from the property and transported to an emergency shelter set up at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. The owner of the rescue faces a single charge of second-degree animal cruelty, which is a misdemeanor. She surrendered most of the dogs.
This is sweet Boston...he crossed the rainbow bridge today. A member of The Way Home Rescue Alliance picked up Boston on Tuesday in Rockcastle County. Boston had been shot some time ago and over time had developed a severe systemic infection and quit eating. When he was picked up and taken immediately to the vet, he was skin and bones. His owners knew he had been shot and that he was progressively getting worse, but chose to ignore him and his urgent medical needs. They allowed him to suffer over several weeks, getting attacked by the other dogs in the area that run loose (there were scars and fresh wounds on his body) and letting him starve. Bostonwas too weak to fight back... TWHR did not find out about Boston until Monday night and immediately went and got him Tuesday. The vet did everything he could to get Boston stabilized and get him back on the road to recovery, but Boston was getting worse with treatment and he was too far gone. He was suffering, so they sent him to be at peace over the rainbow bridge. Boston didn't need to suffer anymore than he already had.
The Gallatin County Animal Shelter seized more than 100 animals from a woman's home on Highway 42 in Sparta, KY. Among the seized animals were 20 dogs, 76 chickens and seven turkeys. Neighbors stated the woman would often leave the dogs tied to trees for days. According to an animal control officer, the animals were in bad shape. "Some of them were just standing there in mud holes and they were all wet. Some of them were real thin." One of the dogs died after being rescued. In January 2011 seventeen dogs were taken from this same woman after animal control officers found the dogs chained to trees in freezing temperatures.
A black and white pit bull terrier mix was found on a road in the Valley Station area of Louisville in late February badly beaten. The female dog, who has been named Blessing, had a severe skull fracture and had been shot in the head four times by a pellet gun. The trauma was so severe rescuers believe that the skull fracture was not caused by a kick, but from an object like a baseball bat or a stick. Blessing is slowly recovering in a foster home.
Hardin County Animal Control, Vine Grove Police and numerous volunteers rescued approximately 100 dogs from a trailer in Vine Grove, KY. A phone tip to animal control initiated the raid. When officials went to the home, they discovered dogs without water and in a room with a temperature around 80 degrees. Some of the pups were a little lethargic and some dogs were dead. About half the dogs that were seized are younger than 8 weeks old, and some of their nursing mothers are in bad shape. While the owners' claim the dogs were their children and all had names, clothes, and beds, one of the rescuers commented that one nursing mother was very thin...you could count every rib and her backbone was showing. "She was living in feces and urine...she also had a dead puppy in her cage with her. This is the face of a puppy mill." Officials stated this was the biggest puppy mill bust in Hardin County history. The couple has been charged with 89 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals - a Class A misdemeanor - punishable by up to one year in jail.************************************************************************
***************************************************************January 3, 2014 ~ MASON COUNTY: KY man arrested with 18 dead horses on property was sending them to Mexico for human consumption
Eighteen horses found dead on a Mason County farm were meant to be shipped to Mexico for human consumption. The kill buyer was arrested on 23 counts of animal cruelty. He was released the same day after posting a $500 bond for himself. A Mason County Sheriff responded to the farm after receiving tips of dead horses in the field. This wasn't the first time that officers responded to this particular farm. In 2010, the kill buyer was charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty and six counts of failure to dispose of a carcass properly. The 2010 investigation determined 30 horses and donkeys on the farm were neglected and left without food and water. Six of the 30 horses died. As a result, the kill buyer was given jail time and probation for two years. He was recently released from that probation. The Sheriff's department has responded to the farm for animals running at large four times. The new findings marked the fifth time police have been to the farm in a week. Half of the business was shipping horses to Mexico for human consumption, but some of the horses were too sick to send.
April 7, 2014 ~ PENDLETON COUNTY: Man charged with animal cruelty after 49 horses found dead on N.Ky. farm
A Pendleton County horse owner was charged with 14 counts of animal cruelty. An animal control officer discovered 49 dead horses and 14 horses in poor condition on the Pendleton County farm after receiving an anonymous tip. Beyond the animal cruelty charges that stemmed from the investigation, the farm owner was also charged with 49 counts of failing to dispose of carcasses within 48 hours due to the 49 dead horses discovered on his property. As a defense, the farm owner claimed people abandoned horses on his farm. “When they drop them off and they're extremely thin, emaciated, I get them fat again. They’d be thanking me instead of complaining, but I do get them fat again and then resell them." The animal control officer said what this was “the worst case” of animal abuse in his nearly decade-long career.
May 30, 2014 ~ BOYLE COUNTY: 'Coon mauling event' disrupts Kentucky fair
An event called a "Coon Dog Treeing Contest," was sanctioned by the Boyle County Fair Board and on the fair's list of scheduled activities. When too few hunters showed up for the contest, one of the event's promoters decided to hold a "coon drag" in the horse arena in the center of the fairgrounds instead. The raccoon was released amid several dogs that were primed for action. But instead of running for the trees, the raccoon loitered and was attacked by the dogs. "When I first saw it, I thought the dogs had a toy. They had it in their mouths and were pulling in two directions," said a fairgoer. At one point, Barrow said, the raccoon darted into the crowd, brushing her leg as it went. "It did not have eyes," she said. "There was blood all over the place. It looked seriously injured. It went under a picnic table and laid there." The event promoter downplayed the cruelty of the event, and disputed the account provided by Barrow and others. "The coon was fine, just tired," he said, adding that he later released it on a farm. Danville police officers declined to respond the first time they were alerted to the incident but intervened later as it was winding down.
June 2, 2014 ~ HENDERSON COUNTY: Severe Animal Abuse Case
Residents in Reed, outside Henderson, KY, found a black lab scuffling with neighbor dogs. They noticed some wounds, but thought they were from his recent run-ins. When the stray dog was taken in to the Henderson Humane Society, a large neck wound was soon discovered. According to the Humane Society Manager, the neck wound was human-made and couldn’t have been the work of a fight with another animal. The organization’s veterinarian had to cut around the wound to clean away the dead tissue. The pilot who picked up the dog to transport him to the Arrow Fund in Louisville requested that he be named Mooney after the plane that took him to Louisville. Mooney underwent a second surgery to clean away dead tissue and vets drained the numerous puncture wounds on the dog’s body. Dead maggots have also been removed from the dog’s ears and he’s was treated for heartworms. A Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife officer killed a mountain lion on a Bourbon County farm on Monday, marking the first confirmed sighting of a mountain lion in Kentucky since before the Civil War. A farmer spotted the cat in a tree and alerted the department. When the officer responded, he found the animal had been trapped in different tree by a barking dog and decided it was best to "dispatch it." Mountain lions were once native to Kentucky but they were killed off here more than a century ago. The wildlife officer shot the cat because it was getting dark and he feared that it would slip away in darkness and threaten people in the nearby city of Paris.
States that kill the animals when they enter are wrong for doing it and that the animals shouldn't cause fear. According to an animal expert, "If you're a deer, they're a little dangerous. If you're a human, not so much," she said. "Attacks on people are not that common. There have only been 22 deaths in the last 120 years."
December 17, 2014 ~ ROWAN COUNTY: Pet Owner, charged with animal cruelty, arrested in Rowan County
A pet owner, charged with animal cruelty, is now behind bars, after one of his dogs was found dead and the other was considered to be near-death. Ricky Gee was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree animal cruelty, a class A misdemeanor that carries a penalty of up to 90 days in jail. Lola, a Doberman, was found chained to a pole behind Gee's house along with the body of her young puppy. Lola weighed about 34 pounds when she was rescued. She should have weighed about 70 and has since gained 25 pounds. She had nearly no muscle mass and was severely anemic, but now has muscle definition and is completely clear of anemia.
Nine dogs were found at a home chained up, hungry, and apparently abandoned. According to neighbors, the owner had moved out several months ago. The animal control officer who went to the property said some of the dogs had no collars, only chains wrapped around their necks. "The chains were all twisted and wadded up till they couldn't even got to their shelters. They only had a few inches to move." A warrant has been issued for the woman who had lived on the property and she could face 10 counts of animal cruelty. A woman who lives nearby said she tried to help make sure the animals didn't starve. "I would just throw the rest of my leftovers over the hill into their cages and stuff because they didn't have anything, no water, no food. They just looked sad and miserable." The pets were taken to an animal shelter in Rowan County and several animal rescue groups are working on finding homes them homes.MAY 2015
A 6-month-old white dog was found near the trash bins of an apartment building on Beauford Place in Nicholasville and brought to the Jessamine County Animal Shelter. A veterinarian who evaluated the puppy estimated she should weigh 21 to 24 pounds, but she weighed half that. According to the Director of Jessamine Public Services,, “This is one of the most emaciated dogs our staff has seen in a very long time. It's clear by the markings on her neck that she wore a collar at one time and may have been someone's pet. The puppy has been gaining weight and has no other health problems.JULY 2015
Hopefully, whoever did this will see what his/her irresponsible behavior has caused. Please do not think you are doing your pet justice just because you are giving yourself peace of mind by throwing your unwanted dog or cat out at our gate. This little guy was thrown out Saturday and died from injuries that could have been prevented if the owner would have accepted responsibility of their pet and at least done it enough justice to not just dump him by the road. Three weeks ago a beautiful black and white cat with a pink collar was dumped at the gate and we had to scrape him/her off the highway.SEPTEMBER 2015
Jessamine County Animal Care and Control officers received complaints of animal cruelty at a home in Nicholasville . They obtained a search warrant and removed 19 dogs from the home. The conditions at the home were deplorable. According to the Director of Jessamine County Public Services, “The animals were infested with fleas and worms. We brought a veterinarian that did a brief exam on the dogs. Many were found to be anemic.” The dogs removed from the home included Chihuahuas Dachshunds and Saint Bernards. Fifteen of the dogs will be available for adoption as soon as their healthy enough to be placed in a home. The remaining four will remain in custody and used as evidence in the case. The owner is expected to be charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty.
At least two dogs were hit by cars and killed in Clay County after a suspected puppy mill or animal hoarder dumped 25 dogs along side Highway 15-24. A woman who lives nearby was able to save 10 of the dogs by putting them in the back of her husband’s pick up. Rescuers and police went out and found an additional sixteen dogs. Assisting with the recovery of the dogs were the Kentucky State Police and the Clay County Sheriff's Office. All of the surviving dogs have various medical problems, including skin infections, upper respiratory infections, fleas, ticks, mites and eye infections. Many of the dogs are small breed Shih Tzus, Chihuahuas and Maltese. Five of the rescued dogs were taken to Kentucky S.A.V.E. The rest of the dogs have been transferred to the Woodstock Spay and Neuter Animal Clinic. Police believe the dogs were dumped by a white woman in a black truck.
Laurel County Animal Shelter received 29 dogs from the same location as a result of a hoarding/puppy mill situation. The high intake has resulted in an emergency situation in an already crowed shelter. Because many of the hoarder/puppy mill dogs have medical needs over what the shelter's adoption fee requires, these dogs are available only to non-profit rescue organizations.
Molly, a five month old black lab, was in the woods behind her home in the Herrineton Haven Subdivision in Garrard County on a Saturday evening. A neighbor heard a dog crying for help and went to check out the noise. The neighbor found Molly trying to drag herself on her side home with an arrow sticking out of her. The arrow hit part of Molly's spine. Molly was treated by a vet, but had to be euthanized after one month due to the severity of her injuries. Molly’s owner said there are a lot of deer in the woods near his home, but he has a hard time believing the incident was accidental. "You can tell a 5-month-old lab from a deer," he said.OCTOBER 2015
Three emaciated pit bull mixes were rescued from a house in Nicholasville. Frank Ruggiero, the Animal Care and Control shelter manager, said an investigation was conducted after someone called to report that there was an emaciated dog chained to a fence behind a house. The signs of neglect are clear. The dogs’ ribs are poking out of their skin and their tails are tucked between their legs. Animal Control employees are nursing the three dogs back to health. The malnourished dogs shake in fear and are too scared to move. The oldest dog, who is about 1.5 years old, is in the worst condition. The two puppies are about a year old. A co-worker told Ruggieo that the owner was planning to pay the vet fees and to take the dogs home. However, Ruggiero says he is preparing to ask the county attorney to charge the owner with second-degree animal cruelty. “Tell him it will all come out in court and if he has a problem with that I’ll call the sheriff right now,” replied Ruggiero. Animal Control has custody of the dogs. The dogs will probably be ready for a foster home in two to three weeks and it will probably be another three to six months before they are ready for adoption.
Franklin County Animal Control Officers and Franklin County Sheriff's Deputies raided a home in Frankfort after multiple complaints about the residence. Inside the home, officials found a zoo of animals living in a residence not fit for humans, let alone animals. An 8-foot-long python and a boa constrictor, along with four geese, two dogs and cats and several exotic birds were found inside the home. The owners surrendered most of the animals including a malnourished Doberman. Animal cruelty charges will likely be filed against the owners.
A beagle was found dead inside a bucket near the Humane Society of Henderson County. A surveillance video shows a driver speeding past the gate and disposing of the young female beagle after the shelter had already closed. "It had very large mammary tumors on her, it looks like she had been over bred," said Animal Control Officer Katie Crooks. "It was stuffed down inside the bucket with a plastic bag covering it." Animal Control officers are hoping to identify the individual. They say what happened is a crime. "Neglect definitely played a part in it especially with the large mammary tumors, those don't happen over night," Crooks said. "There was a straw found in its mouth so this animal was probably kept in a beagle hutch." Officers are concerned this owner has other dogs. NOVEMBER 2015
November 14, 2015 ~ JOHNSON COUNTY: Van Lear, KY: Johnson County woman charged with cruelty to animals
Deputies responded to a call of animal negligect on property in Van Lear and found a dead dog and an emaciated dog. According to one of the deputies, ”It was probably one of the worst things that I've seen as far as being a deputy and dealing with animals." The dead dog appeared to have been starved to death. It was still on a chain hooked up to the ground near a creek bed. The second dog was tied to a cinder block and had no food, water and shelter. The dog appeared to have a hump on its back and had apparently been raised in a rabbit cage, which was the cause of the hump. The owner of the property, a 24 year old woman, claimed the dogs did not belong to her. In response, a deputy said, "Those dogs have been there for months, there's no way you don't know there's two dogs starving to death in your back yard." The surviving dog was taken by an animal rescue group where it is receiving care. The woman has been charged with animal cruelty.
Martin County Sheriff's Deputies were called out to a small fire in Tomahawk and found more than a dozen dogs in poor condition. Most of the dogs had mange and fleas, and were in bad shape. The condition of the house was even worse. The floors and walls were covered with feces. The only place were the homeowner could sit was in one small area. He couldn’t lay in his bed because it was covered with feces. Twenty-seven dogs were rescued. Stray Hearts Animal Rescue took all of the dogs to the vet. Six of the dogs had mange, some had scabies, and three had heart murmurs. Two of the dogs were euthanized because they were vicious. The owner of the dogs was not arrested because of his health, and how much it would cost the county to house him in jail. He is charged with 27 counts of animal cruelty.
Thirty-six dogs were rescued from a small house in Ashland. The situation was described as one of the worst the animal control officer had ever seen. “Unsanitary, feces everywhere, basically a gigantic indoor dog kennel that hasn't been kept up." Food and water were not properly distributed. The homeowner, who has been charged with second degree animal cruelty, may have had good intentions, but was just in over her head. Most of the dogs taken from the home were Chihuahua mixes.
PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THIS! Driving up toward the Kentucky Regional River Animal Shelter to park the van and get my car I noticed something setting inside the gate entrance...mind you its 32 degrees out in a coyote infested area...but as I got closer I realized it was a box of precious puppies someone had just set out!! Luckily I was transporting late and got to these babies in time. DO NOT do this people...ever. You may think you're helping these pups but you endangered them greatly!! So needless to say I'm extremely upset! But tonight these babies are going home with me!! UPDATE: THEY HAVE GONE TO RESCUE!
A Bracken County family’s 2-year-old German Shepherd Dog named Kayla wandered off Thanksgiving Day. She was missing for more than 24 hours before the family found her. She had been shot by a hunter and left to die. Their neighbor, who initially denied any knowledge of the incident, subsequently claimed that he thought Kayla was a coyote chasing a deer and shot her. A Kentucky game warden said one reason Kayla was left to die is because Kentucky does not require hunters to retrieve what they shoot. Kayla suffered blood loss and underwent surgery to amputate one of her legs. Her family said they received an apology from their neighbor/hunter, but they are troubled by the ordeal. Kayla still has to undergo at least one more surgery. The sheriff's department and game warden are looking into the case.DECEMBER 2015
A woman called animal control to report a white dog running loose on her property. She told deputies several of her chickens had been killed and others were missing. The woman wasn't sure if the dog was responsible. Animal control officers went to the home and set a trap. When the dog was caught, the woman put the dog in a pen, intending to call animal control to pick up the dog. Before the woman could make the call, the woman’s father-in-law pulled up in his truck and shot the dog with a 22 rifle. The father-in-law claimed the dog was a menace, running loose, and killing his son's chickens. The dog was shot twice. Both went through both sides, one in her face and one in her neck. The dog is expected to make a full recovery. The father-in law is facing animal cruelty charges. The dog’s owner has been identified through a microchip.
Sweet Cora was seized from her owners for cruelty and neglect. She was taken to the Daviess County Animal Shelter where she was held for two months while the court case proceeded against Cora's owners. Cora was FINALLY released and went to rescue.
Employees at the Lexington Humane Society arrived at work on Thursday to find two boxes full of cats in their parking lot. The cats and kittens, ranging in age from newborn to a couple years old, were wallowing in urine and feces, and in distress. Some of the cats had chewed through the boxes and were found in nearby bushes, trees, and storm drains. The humane society found twenty cats on Thursday and more on Friday for a total of thirty cats. The parking lot is in an industrial area close to a busy road.
Howard came into the shelter with severe injuries. The injuries appeared to have come from his body being tangled up in a chain or rope. He had also broken off all his teeth at the gums (probably trying to free himself). No information on his previous life or owners. He was taken to a vet where he is being treated for severe injuries. Howard is estimated to be about 8 years old. He is extremely emaciated with a body condition score of 2/9. Howard is also heartworm positive, has low serum protein levels (albumin at 1.7 which is a concern for delayed wound healing), and has two open wounds. The wound on his left front leg is severely necrotic and infected.
Homeward Bound Rescue was raided by police for hoarding, neglecting, and abusing over 100 dogs. According to their website, Homeward Bound is a 501C3 nonprofit rescue funded by donations and fundraising activities. They work with high kill shelters to pull dogs from death row. In November a trooper went to the property after receiving complaints and found animals living in deplorable conditions. At that time thirty dogs were removed from the property.The Rescue's Director was arrested and charged with 2nd degree animal abuse. The arrest was the result of a month long investigation into Homeward Bound. One-hundred thirty dogs living outside of the residence were removed during the recent raid.
A Wayne County man was arrested for stealing animals and offering to return them in exchange for sex. The crime began with the theft of 25 roosters, a goat, rooster pens, and other equipment used to keep the roosters. Texts on the victim's phone showed that the man threatened to beat the victim if he reported the theft. The victim called police and they charged the man with promoting prostitution and third degree terroristic threatening. ***Not to slander anyone, but why would anyone have 25 roosters? Also, the pens in which the stolen roosters were kept look like the ones people involved in cockfighting use. Considering Kentucky’s history of turning a blind eye to animal abuse, I doubt if any official considered the possibility or even cared that the victim might have been engaging in illegal activity.
A black Labrador Retriever mix was discovered in Rowan County riddled with buckshot. The animal control officer took the dog to the vet to be euthanized due to the severity of his injuries. The Arrow Fund in Louisville was contacted and the dog, now named Marvel, was transported and placed in their care. Marvel has over 100 buckshot wounds in his chest and more in his abdomen and the rest of his body. He is being observed 24 hours a day at Blue Pearl. His breathing is especially being watched. Marvel has free air in the chest and prominent bruising in his lungs. He is stiff and painful as you can imagine. When standing he is wobbly from nerve damage. There is a pocket of fluid building under his armpit. He also is not able to properly place his front right foot, most likely from nerve damage as well. Exploratory surgery is still a possibility, especially if additional fluid builds up or if pellets shift and cause additional problems. Marvel is not out of the woods. He is receiving IV antibiotics and pain medications, and is being kept comfortable. Please keep Marvel close to your heart , he needs us all....
Tyson’s Chance Animal Foundation was contacted by a police officer after a female dog was was found shot in the face. The dog was rushed to a vet where she was found to be stable, but in shock. The foundation named the dog Amara. She was kept sedated and monitored because her blood volume was low. Surgery was ultimately performed to remove Amara’s eye. It was also discovered that Amara had a raging ear infection, which ruptured one of her ear drums, and that she had bitten completely through her tongue, probably when she was shot, resulting in quite a bit of damage. She will be kept very comfortable on pain medicine and antibiotics and begin the road to recovery. Despite her injuries, Amara is sweet, loving, affectionate and trusting.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
December 30, 2015 ~ GARRARD COUNTY: Note claims woman's missing dog was killed
A family’s one year old Pit Bull Terrier named Clyde went missing at the end of December. Clyde was described as a beloved family pet who made friends with everyone. The only thing Clyde had a problem with was being tied up. He would break off the hook where he was tied to and roam around. Clyde broke through his chain again. His family searched for him with no luck and posted on Facebook with his photos and a plea to help find him. A few days later the family found a note taped to the stop sign at the end of the road. The very graphic note described Clyde’s fate. The note, written by one of the family’s neighbor’s, said Clyde strayed onto the wrong property and the property owner let his dogs attack him. The note stated, “I should have returned its bloody carcass, but instead I put it on the burn pile.”
Most of the neighbors knew Clyde by name and most welcomed a visit from him. Some neighbors complained, but the family was trying to train Clyde not to run away. The owner kept trying to tie him up and tried outdoor kennels as well. She had to break the news to her children, who just a few weeks ago, couldn’t get a family picture without Clyde sneaking in it. Sheriff’s Deputies came to take a report and they took the letter that was taped to the stop sign. They are investigating the case.
Greenwood Avenue when they found a 6 month-old puppy hiding under brush.
The puppy had what was believed to be chemical burns on his body.
Louisville Metro Animal Services was contacted and the dog was rushed to
the LMAS Animal Care Center. In addition to the burns, the puppy had a
tar-like substance on its head and right front leg. The dog, who has
been named Alley, was transferred to the Kentucky Humane Society for
January 28, 2017: SHELBY COUNTY ~ Miniature horse stabbed multiple times in Shelby County
A
resident of Shelby County went to feed his miniature horse that he has
had for 16 years and discovered that someone had stabbed her. The
sweet-tempered miniature horse in Shelbyville named Princess is
recovering after being attacked twice in a matter of five days.
According to the horse's owner, "They stabbed her on one side and it
just hit the bone on the ribs. Then on the other side, they had stabbed
her and broke the handle off." The blade was still lodged in the horse's
side and had to be removed by the vet. A few days before the stabbing,
Princess was also attacked by a dog. The dog was actually hanging on the
horse, when the owner's son called the owner for help. The owner shot
and killed the dog and called 911. Kentucky State Police showed up as
well as animal control. Authorities say he was well within his rights to
shoot the dog. Princess required stitches on her face and sides. She is
expected to recover from her wounds. According to police, it's unclear
if the two incidents are related.
February 1, 2017: TRIMBLE COUNTY ~ 15 dead horses found on abandoned farm in Trimble County
Henry County Animal Control went to a home on Perkinson Lane in Trimble County for a probation check and observed three horse carcasses from the driveway. A search warrant was obtained and animal control subsequently found the skeletal remains of 12 other horses and many rabbits on the property. Twelve other horses on the property were found to be malnourished. Several large hay bales were brought to the property since there was no food in the large pasture where the surviving horses were being kept. Investigators don't know how long the animals were without food or water. A rescue group with Windy Meadows Equine Center responded to a plea for help and began removing the remaining horses to take to their 300-acre farm in Oldham County. All the horses were immediately check by a veterinarian. Animal cruelty in Kentucky is a misdemeanor. The owner of property could face more than 35 counts of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of a carcass and could face a year in jail for each count.
February 12 , 2017: CLARK COUNTY ~ Severely Neglected Dog
Maggie
came into the shelter's care through a series of events that lead to
the discovery of her and the living conditions of her and her former
owner. This is truly a sad situation and the important thing now is that
Maggie is safe and her former owner is getting help. Maggie was so
severely matted that staff at the shelter wasn't sure her eyes still
existed under the solid mat that covered her face. Her legs were solid
casts that felt like rock. A groomer from Fairy Tails Pet Spaw jumped
into action at 6pm on a Saturday when she should have been headed home
to relax after a day at work. It took the groomer, her son (assistant)
and the shelter director nearly 2.5 solid hours of working on this sweet
girl to get her cleaned up. One of her legs is damaged, we believe from
being matted so severely that the leg basically died. Maggie had sores on
her body that are being treated and she will see a vet this week to
address other issues she may have.
he was an older guy, though an exact age could not be determined. You
could not check his teeth for aging because he would try to bite...we
assume this was because he was in pain due to the mass on his face. He
was about 10lbs. We learned that this little guy had a Grade III heart
murmur. The growths and masses on his body had ruptured and smelled of
infection. They likely would not be able to be surgically removed
because there would not be enough good skin remaining to close the
incision sites. In addition, he had horrible flea infestation, was
horribly skinny, and had dry eye. Due to the severity of his condition,
treatment options, and poor prognosis, TWHRA decided to have him
humanely euthanized. We are sorry we couldn't do more for you little
guy. Run free across the rainbow bridge sweet boy.
AUGUST 2017
August 2, 2017: GREENUP COUNTY ! Rescue Hoarder
From August 2 - 4, at the request of Greenup Co. Animal Control, rescuers and a local veterinary office removed a total of 46 animals living in deplorable conditions at Joyful Paws K9 Rescue in Greenup County, KY. Although there was the stench of decomposition, and
the barks of multiple dogs inside the home, officials were "satisfied"
with the results, and NO action was taken to obtain a search warrant for
inside the home, and NO CHARGES were filed against the offenders.
Dogs
were living in complete filth, with several inches of feces and urine
caked "straw" lining their crates and kennels. Water buckets were empty
or full of black/filthy water, and some buckets contained the bloated
bodies of dead rats. Food bags littered the kennel floors, and food
bowls contained mold and maggots. Dog food was scattered on the kennel
floors amongst feces, urine, and the decomposing corpses of rats.
Many
of the dogs were in desperate need of medical care. Some had open
wounds. Many were weak and infested with thousands of fleas, being
bitten by flies. One female dog had given birth to puppies earlier in
the day, in her feces filled crate that was far too small for her size,
much less to share with six newborn puppies.
Even
after seeing the conditions, smelling the intensely foul odor, and
knowing there were more animals inside the home, NO ADDITIONAL ACTION
WAS TAKEN BY ANIMAL CONTROL OR COUNTY AUTHORITIES. NONE.
August 13, 2017: PERRY COUNTY ~ Adult male Coonhound found underneath a train
Rooney, a male Coonhound, was found under a train in Perry County, KY. He was severely emaciated and maggot infested with many open wounds. Rooney was also anemic. He was taken under the wing of the Arrow fund and transported to a vet in Louisville. Layers upon layers of maggots were embedded under Rooney’s skin. His wounds were many and severe. Infection was present. An ultrasound revealed his belly was full of rocks. Most likely he ate the rocks while collapsed on the train track. Many times dogs will just eat anything when starving. Rooney’s wounds will be evaluated each day.
October 4, 2017: JOHNSON COUNTY ~ Reward offered in Johnson County dog’s death
Employees and customers at the Dollar General store in Staffordshire adopted a friendly stray dog who they feed daily. They called the dog "Dollar Dog." Someone placed a large pile of dog food between the center lines of Route 40 near the store. The dog entered the road to eat the food, was struck by a car and died. Due to the size of the pile of food, workers believe it was an intentional act. The devastated workers and members of the community are offering a reward for information leading to charges.
October 9, 2017: GALLATIN COUNTY ~ Abandoned dog dragging 6-pound tumor gets second chance at life
Clyde, a one year old Shepherd/Husky mix, was rescued after his owner dropped him off at the Gallatin County Animal Shelter and told the staff to euthanize him. Vets believe the tumor grew for six months, half of Clyde’s life. The owner watched this young dog run around dragging this huge mass everyday. When Clyde began to experience extreme pain and the mass was bleeding, the owner dumped him at the shelter and said, “kill him.” Instead, employees sent out a plea for help and HART Animal Rescue responded. Surgery was performed and Clyde is on the road to recovery. The tumor weighed more than 6 pounds. "He's only a year old… way too young for a death sentence," said a representative of HART Animal Rescue. Clyde's recovery is hardly over and could include chemotherapy if he is diagnosed with cancer. However, he has a chance, which is something more than he had before.
October 10, 2017: LAWRENCE COUNTY ~ Starving Chained Dog
A Good Samaritan (GS)/animal advocate received a message from a friend regarding a starving dog that was chained up. Since she lived just a few house from where the dog was located, the GS went to check on the dog and what she discovered shocked her. The dog was starving and chained to a dog house. She knocked on the door of the person’s home several times, but either no one was home or no one came to door. The Good Samaritan and the friend called the police, but were told it would be the next morning before anyone could check on the dog. The GS took pictures to document why she couldn't leave the dog and immediately took him to a place where he could receive immediate help. This dog didn't get in this condition overnight. The dog is currently being cared for by the Lawrence County Humane Society in Louisa, KY.
He went back into his truck, drove down the hill, and dumped this beautiful Golden Retriever out on the road. A woman witnessed this. After searching, the woman found Ginger and took her home to foster. Ginger Snap, was a happy girl until yesterday. She was rushed to the vet and the sad news is that she has Parvo. DECEMBER 2017
December 5, 2017: MADISON COUNTY ~ Neighbor traps and kills cat
A man living in Richmond, KY has a neighbor behind him who lives on Charlie Norris Road. The neighbor has beagles. He traps rabbits in the woods behind the man’s house and puts them in a fenced-in area for his dogs to run. The fenced in area has very small holes so the rabbits can’t escape. The fence is also completely electrified. The man’s cat went missing, so after a couple of days he walked out back to see if the cat had been trapped by accident. To his horror, the man found big metal traps, several empty cans of cat food, and several dead animals, including two cats. The animals had been taken out of the traps and their heads had been smashed. One of the dead animals was the man’s cat. The man thought, “Who would do such a horrific thing to someone’s pet?” He called the police and was told there wasn’t anything they could do, but they would talk to the neighbor. When a police officer arrived, the man followed him to the neighbor’s house, but no one was home. The police officer said he would try to contact the neighbor and would be in touch. That has not happened as of yet. The man has other pets, so now he is worried that they as well as the pets of other neighbors might be killed by the neighbor.
Two starving, emaciated boxers were discovered in a home in Owensboro after concerned neighbors contacted Daviess County Animal Control. The two cases are related. The dogs found on Wednesday originally had been staying at the second home. One of the dogs rescued on Wednesday wouldn't have made it more than another day or two. Neighbors became emotional and were sickened by the idea that the dogs were living in such terrible conditions.
One of the individuals used his scissors to cut the pillow case open and discovered 9 dead puppies and a brick. Someone had thrown them in the lake and someone had obviously pulled them out probably fishing because the pillow case was wet when the individual cut it open. The cold hearted idiot who did this, shame on you! Nine beautiful puppies drowned/killed. You could tell from the shape of the puppies that the incident was recent because there was no damage to the pups from being in the water.
April 5, 2018 - JOHNSON COUNTY: Cats removed from home in deplorable condition
The Johnson County Animal Shelter assisted an Animal Protection Officer and Animal Control Officer with removing 13 cats from deplorable conditions in a home in the community. The cats lived most of their lives in pet carriers with little or no cleaning. Most of the cats were at least 2 years old. Some were in pretty bad shape. Several had hair loss due to flea allergies and some were underweight. At first the cats were thought to be feral, but as volunteers spent time with them they found that some of the cats were just frightened with the new environment. In fact, many wanted and needed attention. Five of the cats were taken to the vet and none tested FIV/FeLV positive. All were spayed or neutered and given rabies shots.
July 3, 2018 ~ CARTER COUNTY: Man facing hundreds of animal cruelty charges
Carter
County Animal Control and Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources
officers raided a man’s property in Carter County because he allegedly
had far too many animals on his 16 acres of property. Twenty-five dogs,
16 cats, and 11 possums were removed from the man's mobile home. The
officers also took donkeys, horses, goats and llamas. One officer said
the animals didn't have adequate food, water, or basic care. A llama and
a goat were euthanized because they were in bad shape and
unable to stand. The man claimed that many of the animals he took in
were rescues because no one wanted them and that the goat and llama were
dying because they were old. He disputed that his animals were not
cared for. "I bleach their kennels and wash their rugs and blankets," he
said. "Every day, I do three loads of laundry to make sure my dogs are
in a clean and well-kept environment." The man is facing 560 counts of
second-degree cruelty to animals and 11 counts of holding wildlife
without a permit. He is also facing charges in connection with poisoning
animals. The man claimed that he was trying to poison coyotes to
prevent them from attacking his animals, but officers said several
neighborhood dogs turned up missing, and it's believed they may have
ingested the poison. The animals were taken to Tri-County Animal Shelter
near Morehead. The large intake of the animals put the shelter above
its maximum capacity. Hundreds of geese were not removed from the
property allegedly because there was no place to put them.
Two small puppies were found on the side of a rural Clark County road in the pouring rain. The puppies received fluids and are being feed a controlled diet until they are a little more stable. We hope they recover quickly and can move past the terrible conditions they have lived through during their short little lives. On Sunday, June 7, 2020 at 12:05pm, Henderson County KY Animal Control was dispatched by the Henderson Police Department to the Sam Ball Way Fairgrounds where a dog was found burned in an apparent arson in the men’s restroom. Upon observation, it was clear the death had occurred during the night, approximately 12 hours prior to being discovered and that the dog had been intentionally burned alive. The male dog was identified by his rabies tags and matched with a dog who had been reported missing on social media and to our shelter. The owner was notified by Animal Control and the HPD. Our sincerest sympathy and heartbreak for Duke’s family is shared across the tri-state area.
These two puppies were reported as strays and picked up by animal control from a nearby home. Initially, three puppies and a momma dog were reported but only two dogs were subsequently reported and recovered. According to the person who complained about the family, the dogs were a threat to chickens. One puppy had two injured legs and was taken to the vet. An exam revealed the pup had a bullet and significant buckshot along his legs and side. He also had a severe infection in the other leg. The injuries were causing significant pain. The bullet in his leg was removed, but a bullet remains in his stomach. One leg is in a splint and the other in a cast. Because He will be growing, he will need frequent vet exams to evaluate his healing and cast revisions will be made. Despite his surgery today and multiple issues he is in good spirits. Lilly was taken to the vet by her "owner". She had 2 hematomas and the ear canal was closed off so it couldn't drain. The "owner" refused to treat Lilly's ears, so he was going to take her home and SHOOT her. The man let the infection progress until Lilly required surgery to help her. THE WORST PART IS HE WAS TORMENTING HIS OWN CHILD BY THREATENING TO SHOOT LILLY IN FRONT OF HIM. The child was in tears over his father's hateful attitude. Lilly is VERY sweet...Can you imagine how she must have felt with 2 sore ears? The man signed Lilly over to the vet who called STAR to rescue her.
The rescue agreed that Shari deserved a chance of a decent life so she went to the vet for a long stay until she is well enough to go into a foster home, or better yet - a real home of her own. She is suffering from demodectic mange which is NOT contagious, but is passed on from the mother in the blood. She is on antibiotics and topical treatment. In addition to the skin issue, she has also been starved. Because she has never been shown love, she is a little scared too. However, she has not been aggressive at all, just scared of what is going on and wondering what her fate is...
Puppy Infested with Worms
There is a new angel in Heaven. Sweet little Tannie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He went with love and the knowledge that he mattered. He has two siblings waiting at the Bridge. The diagnosis was mass infestation of hookworms. This little baby was brought to the Rowan County Animal Shelter by his "owner" with 6 other dogs, 4 of which were his mom and 3 litter mates. They arrived on a Saturday eaten up with worms. The pound dewormed them and by Monday, this poor 2 1/2 pound baby had light in his eyes again and was walking around. Tuesday he took a turn for the worse and couldn't even hold his head up. He was taken to the vet and received blood transfusions, but he could not be saved. Please worm your puppies.
Two Puppies Dumped Near Animal Shelter
Ryan's story is a sad one. He was found near the pound by luck. Ryan and his sister had apparently been thrown out near the Rowan County Animal shelter and then Ryan was run over by a car. His sister caught someone's attention and when the person stopped the car to get her, saw Ryan lying in the ditch, unable to get up. He had trauma to the inside of his rear leg, exposing bone, two fractured femurs, a crushed pelvis, and his tail was degloved, requiring amputation. A rescue agreed to take Ryan. He was transported seven hours and taken to a vet for treatment. Shortly after surgery was performed, Ryan suffered a blood clot and died. Meg and Ryan were about 10 weeks old, weighed 8 lbs. and didn't deserve to have such a rough start in life.
Terrible typical story of local adoption
Carmello was a former pound dog adopted locally in February and then put on a chain to spend his life. I have to wonder why people get dogs only to stick them on a chain. As most of us know, chaining causes a dog to be aggressive. Apparently this is what happened to Carmello. He broke his chain and got into a fight with another dog in the neighborhood. Now he is back at the pound and will be put down this week. When Carmello was at the Pound previously, he was with other dogs without issue. So sad that his life will end here now. He was one of our favorite dogs when at Pound last winter. I am so sad that humans have let him down.
Another Life Ends Tragically Because of Ignorance and Chaining
A dog named Big Boy went over an embankment and hung himself. While he struggled to get back up, a woman walking heard gurgling noises and found him. By the time she got him back up, it was too late. Want to know why this happened? Because his owners left him chained with a choke collar without food or water while they went out of town. He struggled for his life. His claw marks are all over the rock wall. This did NOT need to happen. Help us get the word out about the dangers of chaining. UNTIL our lawmakers wake up and put an end to unattended chaining, dogs like Big Boy will continue to to be victims of this cruel practice.
Dog with Embedded Collar
This poor dog wandered the same area for over a month and the apathetic people in the area would not lift a finger to help him. He was ultimately picked up by animal control and taken to a vet with an embedded collar. The smell of his rotting flesh was nauseating. The girls at the vet named him "Kiddo" because they kept telling him, "It's going to be OK Kiddo". When they took the collar out of his neck, hundreds of maggots fell out. Kiddo is doing much better. He seems to be in less pain and is starting to come out of his shell. He is beginning to realize he is safe. Adopted
Animal Control removed 13 dogs and 2 other animals from a home in Spottsville, KY. The dogs were found both inside and outside of the house and were malnourished, the shelter manager said. Many of the crates had 2 inches of waste in them, and several of the dogs had sores and infections on their feet. One dog was dead. The owner, who has been charged with 42 counts of animal neglect, claimed she was a loving animal caretaker who has a lot of pride in breeding dogs. Animal Control views her as a neglectful owner who doesn't deserve responsibility of any animal. The woman, a self proclaimed dog breeder, she says she has spent more than 20 years caring for animals.
Folks, this is definitely upsetting, we know. BUT it’s reality. This is what can happen when people abandon an animal. This stray dog in McLean County was in bad shape and could not be caught. He had obviously been dumped. He had been hanging around a home with other dogs, playing with them and eating some of their food for the last several months. Daviess County Animal Control officers were given permission to step in, since they have the ability to dart dogs. One of the Officers went out a few times with no luck, but he finally caught the dog - thank God for his persistence. The dog wasn't this bad when he first showed up at the home, but he progressively got worse. While sedated, he was taken to the vet who said that he had dog lice. He was treated for that and they suspected that he possibly had other issues as well. He was bloody and battered. Luckily, he was HW negative. The people at the shelter have only seen a few cases THIS BAD.....He was in such bad shape. They THOUGHT he might be an Alaskan Malamute, but even that was not certain. Rescued by the Alaskan Malamute Society.
Jake was an owner surrender. The owners had a muzzle on him for 7 months because they could not deal with him chewing everything up. He is a very nice dog, scared. When you talk to him, he pees. He is crate trained and does not show any aggression towards you. Wants his tummy rubbed. Also has some hair loss due to stress. A REAL GOOD LOOKING & GREAT DOG FOR SURE - NEEDS SOME LOVE. EUTHANIZED
RIP This boy was suffering from separation anxiety. The decision to let him go was not made lightly, but after three failed foster scenarios where his anxiety was putting himself and other dogs in danger, the decision was made to euthanize him. Rest in peace sweet one.
OLD DOG AT THE END OF HIS LIFE: FAMILY WITHOUT COMPASSION… -
In rescue one sees the worst of humans and the best. A Lee County resident had the dog warden pick up their 17 year old black lab that couldn't walk, no bowel control, etc., to take to Estill County Shelter to be put down. Fortunately, a rescue volunteer was there when the dog arrived and she arranged with Mt. View Clinic to take the dog there to be humanely put down. If she would not have done this, the dog would've had to suffer all night at the shelter until the vet could come out the next day. She and the Lee Co. dog warden took the dog to Mountain View Clinic and stayed with him so at least, during the last moments of his life, the dog heard kind words and felt a gentle touch. The Lee Co. warden was going to take him back and bury him. We are so very thankful for their act of compassion and hope karma pays a visit real soon to the so called family of this poor dog.
Rest in Peace
“Imperfect” Puppy Abandoned at Rest Stop
This puppy wasn't perfect, so she was thrown away like so much trash. Little Oona was left behind at a rest stop on I-71. The people who left her didn't worry if she would be okay, if she would live. With her deformed little paw, she wasn't perfect so why should they care?
Fortunately, she was found by someone who did care and who brought her to the Kentucky Humane Society. We looked beyond Oona's problems and found that she was a happy, wiggly, life-affirming little dog who wanted to run and play. We cared for her, keeping her in foster care until she was old enough to be adopted. And she was adopted by a family who was able to see what a sweet and happy girl Oona is. She's found her happily ever after after.
Abandoned in Repossessed House
Cletus, a small senior terrier mix was abandoned inside his home that a bank repossessed. Fourteen other dogs were also living in the house. All of the dogs got out except Cletus. He is now at the shelter. You can see the hurt and confusion on his face. Weight around 20-25 pounds. Slight clouding in both eyes. Sweet as pie!
Puppy Falls From Back of Truck - This little 9 week old girl was brought into the shelter. A woman saw her fall out of the back of a truck and rescued her. Not sure all her injuries, but her leg has an obvious break. She has been named Fey…Spanish for Faith.
GASSING
Many shelters around the country, including Greenup County in Kentucky, are using a barbaric form of euthanasia in their shelter. The only humane system of euthanasia is via intravenous injection. Anything else is cruel and inhumane. Gassing is considered the most cruel. Below is a statement by the Humane Society of the United States against the use of gassing.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) gas is, without question, an unacceptable method of euthanasia in states where shelters can legally obtain and administer sodium pentobarbital.
Next is an excerpt from "Suggested Revisions to Specific Euthansia Methods" These are under consideration by the AVMA in 2010
It was recommended that carbon dioxide (which causes distress to humans and to all mammals in which its use as a euthanasia agent has been carefully investigated) be declared unacceptable as a euthanasia agent in a shelter environment.
It was recommended that shelters in those states that are allowed legal access to injectable euthanasia drugs be encouraged to transition from inhalant agents such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide to injectable agents. It was also recommended that those states that do not currently allow shelters access to injectable euthanasia agents be encouraged to pass such direct licensing laws.
Have you ever seen an animal gassed to death? Below is a link to a video. If you choose to watch this video please pay attention to the last 30 seconds. You can hear the dogs howling and the shelter worker says he can not stand it as he walks out.
*Most unwanted animals are simply ignored and left to fend for themselves before being shot by insensitive individuals who don't want any strays hanging around, begging for a morsel of food to eat. *Located in Ravenna, Kentucky, the Estill County Animal Shelter serves 5 local counties, employing only an animal warden & one part-time worker, and they both put in over full-time hours! This shelter has a very high kill rate, euthanasias are scheduled weekly due to the lack of space and poor condition of many of the animals that are brought in. This facility has ten indoor all-weather kennels, three quarantine kennels, a cat "room", and ten covered indoor/outdoor kennels. Animals are generally given 5-7 days to be found, adopted, rescued, or euthanized.
*In 2007 the shelter took in 2,100 dogs and 500 cats; 66 dogs and 16 cats were euthanized on a single day that same year. According to Teresa Sparks, deputy judge-executive of Estill County, about half of the more than 2,165 animals brought in, including abandoned animals rescued from foreclosed properties, are euthanized. She said however that the euthanasia rate has decreased compared to 2008.
Gallatin County Animal Shelter
Website: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/KY138.html
As recently as late 2009, the Gallatin County Animal Shelter euthanized nearly all its dogs and cats. There were very few adoptions and the shelter was not rescue-friendly. In early 2010, volunteers got involved with the shelter and made it more rescue friendly. As a result, they reduced the euthanasia rate to nearly zero, but that was only because of the help of rescues - their adoption rate was still very low. In January 2011, the county's new Judge Executive agreed to contract out the operations of the shelter to the Friends of Gallatin Shelter (FOGS), a non-profit organization. FOGS is trying hard to prevent euthanizing any animals that come to the shelter, but it's a constant battle.
Grayson County Humane Society*In a town of approximately 6,500 people, this shelter takes in almost 1,000 total cats and dogs per year On average, only a dozen or so of these pets are reclaimed per year, two cats are adopted per month, and one dog is adopted per week. The rest simply MUST be euthanized.
*A small group of volunteers is working to change our local animal shelter from a high-kill, low adoption facility to a Low- or no-kill facility with a high rescue/adoption/reclamation rate. We have been fairly successful in our mission of rescue, but need to increase adoptions to end euthanasia due to shelter over crowding.
Many people have donated and we plan to use that money to purchase the property and we will begin construction just as soon as are able to raise the rest of the funds. We started our contract with the county and transferred all of the dogs and cats on Oct. 30th. The transition has created some challenges, however we have managed to continue to move forward. The Animal Control Officers now drop off all of the animals to the Humane Society. The new addition has been well received by all, even the animals. We are still trying to get in a routine to make things work more smoothly. With that said, we managed 59 adoptions in Oct. and in Nov. 91 animals were taken in with 56 adoptions. Our numbers at the end of Nov. left us with 120 animals inhouse. I am so proud of our staff! Everyone has done an incredible job. Our regular staff consists of Dalena Hall and Brittany Hartman and recently added Mercedes Burkeen, Katie Sellers, Charles Meeks, and Tony Blakemore. Each day is a new day with different challenges to overcome. We are all steadfast in the belief that, “It is all about the animals.” Our mission is to find lifelong homes for all of our animals.
Simpson County Animal Shelter*Our shelter is a very small one. We have 18 cages for cats which hold about one cat per cage and we have 16 dog runs which are about 2 feet wide and 4 feet long with a guillotine door that opens out into another 2 foot by 4 foot run that is "outside" but still on concrete. We can only hold 16 adult dogs and the biggest dogs do not fit into those 2x4 kennels. So when you look at our site and notice a few dogs, please remember that we only have room for 16 basically, and so we fill up quickly and have to make decisions based on room more so than larger shelters might.
*In 2009 we saved 64% of the animals (dogs and cats) that came through our doors. Our euthanasia rate is 36% overall. In 2005 before Friends of the Shelter started helping, the euth rate at the shelter was much higher, in the 95% and above range.
In that time we have had 4 different visits from the Waggin that saved and relocated 56 dogs and puppies to be adopted at adoption centers up north. So far in 2016 40 dogs have gone on the Rescue Waggin. We have also Returned 7 home to their owners and Adopted out 5. Another 12 were rescued by local Rescues. At this point in the year we have already taken in 54 dogs, but we have saved a total of 64, because we came into the year with dogs left from last year. That means that our Shelter is operating over 100% save rate for the year. Yes, we are bragging. This is something to brag about. We are proud to be serving our Webster County Community and making a difference. There are several individuals that helped us get to this point and we couldn`t have done it without them. Thank you. NOVEMBER 2015: A MUST READ FOR KY ANIMAL LOVERS - Shepherdsville, KY: Euthanized cats may be sold as part of research projects KY
While the attempt is made to find homes for every dog and cat housed at the Bullitt County Animal Shelter, director Mark Williams said that is not always possible. Bio Corporation of Alexandria, Minn., is interested in taking any cats which have been euthanized. According to the company’s website, it supplies specimens of various animals to institutions like colleges. Williams said the company is only interested in cats. The county would be paid $3 for each cat euthanized. The company would provide the proper bagging materials and shipping. Besides some additional revenue, the arrangement would save the county about $6 per cat, which is the cost to cremate the animals. Bullitt Fiscal Court members unanimously approved having Wooldridge’s office work with the company to get an agreement.
November 26, 2015: One year ago today five innocent puppies named the CC5 were inhumanely euthanized because the shelter worker did not want to clean up after them and rescues were full. Someone who is paid with our tax dollars decided to play god with their lives. The shelter was not full, these dogs were healthy and full of life, not aggressive and one single individual decided to show who's the boss, who pulls the strings, who has the last word. A year has gone by and many lives have been saved by CCAS and there are many happy tails for those who made it out, but the story is still the same. As long as we do not put pressure on Kentucky for shelter reform, as long as one single individual can decide the life or death of one animal, we are all to blame. The lazy or uneducated person who allowed them to be born and then discarded them, the person who looked the other way, the person who did not SPEAK UP and say enough is enough. While you sit down tomorrow and say thanks for what you have, think about what these 5 innocent lives could have had, if someone that you voted into office had not decided to end it. Be a voice for the voiceless. Some day you may need someone to speak up for you.
God says that I have done my job and now it is time to move on. See letter below
To: Judge Steve Tribble,
I, hereby tender my resignation effective this date from my position at the Christian County Animal Shelter. I have truly enjoyed fighting for the animals of the Christian County over the past 17 years. It is sad that I had to choose to save these dogs since the Deputy Sheriff did not do his job. The "owner" of these neglected dogs has never been held accountable. I regret that I was forced to depart the shelter. My health has gotten worse, and worse, but I have pushed on, all for the Animals. The pain I endured was made tolerable by seeing the animals being saved. I tender this resignation with the understanding that I will be paid for sick time from Oct. 8,2010 through today, as well as, being paid for any accrued vacation time, additionally that no additional charges will ever be brought against me, and that my retirement remain available. I submit this with a SAD HEART and Knowledge that the result will be unnecessary killing of animals.
Date: Saturday, October 23, 2010
We all love you Frieda! But we are not giving up this fight. All of you, the fight is not over just because Frieda was forced to resign. THIS IS NOT OVER! We all need to bombard the Attorney General with letters, and phone calls. Nadine has his contact info. All of us need to be heard. It is not to late!
They have already blocked more dogs from being rescued only hours after Frieda resigned. Do not quit this fight! The Attorney General is interested and waiting to hear from us all. He told Sharon Ross he would look into this situation, and he does want to hear from us all.
Contact Attorney General Jack Conway by fax 1-502-564-2894. Voice your concerns for CCAS animals. Ask him to reinstate Frieda Gilford as Director. Tell him rescues have already been blocked from pulling dogs within hours of Frieda resigning!
Spread Frieda's story and the plight of the CCAS animals on your web sites. Spread it on your face book pages. Talk to the media, talk show hosts, tell all your rescue contacts. FIGHT!!!! It is never to late. DO NOT LET THE ANIMALS DOWN! Never give up when there are lives to save! NEVER GIVE UP!
IN MEMORY OF 16 DOGS AND AT LEAST 20 CATS THAT WERE EUTHANIZED OUT OF REVENGE!!!! JUNE 2016 - I’m sharing this post in order to update everyone on recent events. The public was denied entry to the shelter yesterday. We were told yesterday that they no longer had any cats or kittens available. A reputable rescue contacted the shelter this morning and was told 'there are no cats at this shelter any longer' and told her to look elsewhere. They cannot provide any information as to the fate of these babies. So I'll let everyone make their own assumptions as to the fate of the 20+ cats that were in the shelter as of Monday afternoon.
How the cats were kept at the shelter - all in photos are presumed to have been euthanized. Cats did not receive food or water.
The volunteers were refused entrance to the shelter! Someone from the public went by at 12:30 today (their hours are 7-2), doors were locked, and after knocking, the director came to the door, denied her entrance, and said they had no cats. That means they EUTHANIZED EVERY CAT!!! They have quite possibly euthanized everything in there.
Sick Kitten - She was found dead when volunteers went to the shelter. She has been named Layla. She was dropped of at the UK diagnostics lab. Volunteers are going to have her cremated.
Appreciation goes to Chelsey Daffron, Kayla Sellers, Kelli Lefler, Darien Wallace and others rescues and volunteers for saving what they could from this Shelter. While our hearts are broken over the thousands of dogs being tortured and killed right now in China, right here in KY are animals that are being neglected, and allowed to die. LEX18 said New Albany is not in their listening area, so they will not do a story. They said either Nashville, TN or Bowling Green KY would be the stations to call. If anyone can post a number or a station that will do a story, please share. ~~ THIS "TRI COUNTY SHELTER IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE TRI COUNTY SHELTER IN CLEARFIELD, NEAR MOREHEAD.)
November 2015 - THE WAY HOME RESCUE ALLIANCE HAS AGAIN BEEN BANNED FROM THE ESTILL COUNTY SHELTER
September 24th, 2013 - THE WAY HOME RESCUE ALLIANCE HAS BEEN BANNED FROM THE ESTILL COUNTY SHELTER - PLEASE READ.
NOTE FROM THE WAY HOME RESCUE ALLIANCE
Dear Friends,
TWHRA received a notification today at 5 pm on behalf of Judge Executive Wallace Taylor that the Estill County Shelter will no longer continue its association with The Way Home Rescue Alliance, and that any rescues or adopters interested should be directed to go directly through the Estill County Shelter. We have been BANNED from helping the animals at this shelter of which we have personally worked with for several years. We expect this is in retaliation to the outcry that the Judge Executive received based on our posting yesterday regarding the five dogs killed on Friday. A reason was not provided to us.
Just to be clear on the impact this will have, of the 2024 animals that the Estill County Shelter took in during 2012, 1686 were saved by rescue, which was coordinated and arranged by TWHRA (please feel free to check the numbers, they are public record via Estill County). The majority of the rescues that we coordinate with to save these animals are out of state and require extensive transport, vetting, and boarding arrangements prior to transport, which the Estill County Shelter does not have the man power nor the means to accomplish. In truth, this is a death sentence for the animals at the shelter.
To our knowledge, the animals currently posted in the Urgent Album for euthanasia on 9/26 are still available. The shelter will not be sending us the new intake that arrives, so there will be more dogs and cats in the shelter than what are posted in the album. Because we, unlike those in Estill County, put the well being and safety of the animals as the FIRST PRIORITY, we encourage you to visit the shelter at 50 Ginter Road, Ravenna, KY, or call at 606-723-3587. The shelter does not have the ability to return long distance calls, so keep trying if you don't reach anyone. Emails regarding animals at the shelter should be directed to Tommy Mullen at the shelter is [email protected] or Ellen at [email protected] .
We are deeply saddened and heart sick about this situation, but we felt it our duty as defenders of these animals to make public the deaths of the five innocent lives lost at the shelter for no reason on Friday. It appears that in doing so, the animals still in the shelter will pay the price only because we spoke with truth. This was not our decision, but that of the Estill County Judge Executive. All of the death to come in the shelter will be his burden, not ours.
We do not intend to give up and are in process of determining what our options are. There are no grounds for our rescue to be banned from a public facility which the taxpayers fund. We will keep all informed as we know more.
With deep sadness,
The Way Home Rescue Alliance
Dogs and pups are being gassed at Green County Animal Control because of overcrowding at the shelter. It's a dog pound , but also has cats. Carter County dogs are being sent there…county pays Greenup a monthly fee for animal disposal. Those poor creatures are GASSED!!
Greenup is 100% a gassing facility. Very inhumane treatment of animals. Animals who go there are pretty much given a death sentence. It is the County morgue for animals. There is a group of concerned citizens that just recently began going there to take pictures (when allowed) of the animals and try to find them foster or rescue. Adoptions there are very inexpensive. There's a petition you can sign if you would like to see a change.
Laurel County
June 30, 2016 - Friends unleashed day 1 - ”The primary mission of Laurel County Animal Shelter is to act as a safe haven for homeless and abused animals." They have the KY ACO of the year. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155010149561038&set=a.10150180441056038.367682.679146037&type=3&theater
July 1, 2016 - Friends unleashed day 2 - Judge Westerfield - "Tear down this wall" - Padlocks are cheap. They can be used to secure a kennel gate and deny access to an animal. Walls are expensive. Walls hide things. Laurel Shelter decided to build a wall. I call it the Tommy Baker Wall of Arrogance.
The justification for this wall was "public safety". Stray dogs are kept on the other side. (We all know that strays are inheirantly more dangerous that owner surrenders, right?). No one is allowed behind this wall. Not owners looking for their dog; not volunteers. No one. Only Superman could see what is behind the Tommy Baker Wall. So, the dogs behind the wall are invisible. They do not exist. Out of sight, out of mind, out of existance. Why?.... for real, why?
To be clear, I support the idea of a quarantine for dogs with health or behavioral problems; those in need of special care and handling. The sick, injured, pregnant and unsocialized should have a private area. But in my 2 years at this shelter, less than 5% of all dogs fit that description. So why are 50% of Laurel's dogs quarantined and more importantly, off limits to volunteers? https://www.facebook.com/ron.riddle.58/posts/10155012720206038
July 2, 2016 - Friends unleashed day 3 - Friends always maintained the rule that the rescue who could pull first, did. This saved lives by keeping cages open for new arrivals. When dogs are put on hold for favored rescues, sometimes for a week or more at a time, the shelter fills up faster and dogs are euthanized. When personal relationships and preferences are prioritized over the animals the shelter promises to serve, the shelter is no longer fulfilling its stated mission.
Plus, They welcome and appreciate their local volunteers, ..well, ..sort of ..maybe. Ok, no, they don't actually welcome and appreciate volunteers. If you are a local citizen taxpayer volunteer you can expect to be treated like dirt. It's kind of a dysfunctional relationship when you think about it. Let me see - I can pay you to treat me like crap while I donate my time and money to help you ... wow.
But, if you are an out-of-state rescue diva and will defend their hostile behavior, they'll help you cherry pick the most desirable animals and let you use the county shelter as your own private boarding facility. Pretty cool. https://www.facebook.com/ron.riddle.58/posts/10155015304281038
July 4, 2016 - Friends unleashed day 4 - It's Independence Day, so shut up and volunteer. (I have actually been told that)
At Laurel Shelter you have to shut up to volunteer. The recent requirement that volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement is an obvious and blatant attempt to stifle criticism.
Even volunteers that have been saving lives at this shelter for years are now shut out if they do not sign. As we know, this is a highly competitive, trade secret driven business. Shhhhhhhhh ..... The problem though is this pesky little thing called your 1st Amendment Right to Free Speech. If I witness incompetence, injustice or illegal acts, I reserve the right to speak out. C'mon, this is an Animal Shelter, not National Security.
BTW - The "information concerning the management and operation of the Agency" is not confidential and is subject to open records request. But we all know that Laurel Shelter does not respect open records requests. July 5th - Friends Unleashed Day 5 - Chewy and Ben should be alive today. incompetence killed them. Chewy was a semi-feral dog that had a rescue commitment. He was euthanized in what was explained to be a clerical error. Ben was put to death after biting the ACO during crate loading for his freedom ride.
In both cases the volunteers aware of the situation felt threatened if they spoke out. They were instructed to "take one for the team". This shelter is a mess and employees need to be held to account, especially the KY ACO of the year.
Lawrence County
Dog Shot And Killed By Dog Warden, Puppies Euthanized
http://www.lex18.com/news/dog-shot-and-killed-by-dog-warden-puppies-euthanized/
A dog warden in Lawrence County shoots and kills a dog, who had recently given birth to 9 puppies. The dog warden says he was just doing his job. Many in the community, however, think otherwise.
The phone in Bill Richard's office has not stopped ringing. His machine is now filled with messages from all over the world. "I hope someone puts a bullet in your (expletive) head." Richards has even received death threats from nearly every state in the country, and a few from Australia and Norway. Some messages are tamer than others, while others just want Richards fired from his job as the Lawrence County Dog Warden. "This is appalling, you should lose your job," says one voicemail.
They're all stemming from an incident last Tuesday. When a pitbull was shot and killed by Richards. "It's unfortunate I had to shoot that dog," says Richards. "But at that point is was me or her. Bottom line."
Jessica Shane says the dog followed her husband home from work one day, so they kept it in the front yard. They decided to keep it on a chain until animal control could pick her up.
"We called her Mamma," says Jessica.
But before the dog warden arrived, 'Mamma' gave birth to 9 puppies. "She was so friendly and so loving, she let me hold the puppies," says Jessica.
Jessica fell in love with the dogs. Nonetheless, she simply couldn't keep them. "I was under the impression they were going to the shelter. But that didn't happen. "The warden came and I was gone to pick up my son," says Jessica. "I pulled in and the dog was lying on the ground."
"I told everyone this is what happened: The dog attacked me 3 times," says Richards. "I have every right to shoot this dog. But, what I'm going to do is tranquilize it and try to gain control of it."
So Jessica took her kids inside. When she came back out. "He just looked at me and said, 'don't come any closer,'" remembers Jessica.
"As soon as I turned around she stared at me, growled and lunged. That's when I shot her," says Richards.
The puppies were only a few hours old. So Richards took them to the shelter. But the shelter said the dogs were too young, and couldn't survive without their mother, so they were euthanized.
Richards maintains he was protecting himself and the community. "My job is to get there and seize it. It's not something I enjoy doing. I have dogs at home."
"I don't think she got a fair chance. Everything she did she was doing in defense of those puppies. Had I been there I know I could have gotten them out without incident," says Jessica.
LEX 18 spoke with the county judge executive and he says he stands behind his employee and does not plan to fire him. Richards says he's scared to go back to work after the death threats. As for Jessica, she just hopes something can be learned from this situation.
Jessica says the community has really reached out to her, dropping off dog food for her pets as well as encouraging messages.
YesBiscuit! ~ Chained Mama Dog Shot to Death by KY Dog Warden
http://yesbiscuit.wordpress.com/2011/07/20/chained-mama-dog-shot-to-death-by-ky-dog-warden/
"Any dog warden would – or should – know that, while most dogs are friendly, there are certain dogs strangers should approach with extra caution in order to determine how reactive the dog may or may not be. Dogs who have been fending for themselves on the streets, dogs on chains and dogs who have just whelped a litter would all be candidates for GO SLOW. This poor dog in KY was in all three categories."
January 5, 2015 ~ Scott County: Scott Co. Deputy Shoots Dog That Attacked Him (January 2014)
A Scott County Sheriff's Deputy says he was forced to shoot and kill a dog that attacked him Sunday. Deputy Chris Tudor says he was attacked on a front porch. Scott County Sheriff Tony Hampton says that the deputy attempted to kick the dog off but couldn't. The homeowner is upset about his dog's death. “He came on the deck without thinking, I guess, but he shouldn't have killed my dog. I just don't think that should have happened,” says David Arnold, the dog's owner. There is no word on whether or not charges will be filed against the owner.
This is my Father's Residence. Max was a German Shepherd.
I feel as if this story isn't being explained near enough in detail.
My father nor his residence was involved in any investigation...this is of course left out of this statement of the incident....the officer was on the property on false pretenses. Whomever was being searched for does not live at the residence. And furthermore there are SIGNS clearly stating to be "Beware of Dog" and to not use the front entrance, to use the back entrance instead. I feel as if this entire situation could have been completely avoided.
I am glad the officer did not get seriously injured, however as I said "could have been avoided".
R.I.P to Max, he was loved.
TAYLOR COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER in KENTUCKY - 2013!
This is George. He entered Taylor County Animal Shelter on December 31, 2012. George was sick and never received vetting. George bled out for three. On January 2, 2013, George died from severe blood loss. Not only that, he laid there for the entire 3 day holiday weekend.
The Taylor County Animal Shelter has also announced they will be closing their doors to the public, meaning no adoptions and no rescues. The animals entering the shelter are just as good as dead.
Please help in supporting the Taylor County community, who has taken a stance against animal cruelty within this shelter. Community members have been protesting diligently for these sweet babies.
